AWOL means All Works of Life. Notice the spelling of the second word, Works; it’s not as in the
popular cliché- all walks of life. This implies that we are not following any stereotyped manner/way
of pursuing our goals and objectives.
As our name implies, we are a group of Sierra Leoneans from different vocations of life such as
entrepreneurs, lawyers, journalists, bankers, lecturers, teachers, etc. who share a common
aspiration to genuinely contribute to the cause of nation building.
BACKGROUND
AWOL was founded in 2001 by a small group of friends with the aim to socialize and further their
friendship.
However, when the Late Mr. Moseray Fadika was elected Chairman later that year, the idea of a
National Achievement Awards was born. Thus it was a new dawn of ideology for AWOL.
AWOL was subsequently registered as a community based organization and officially launched at the
British Council Hall on 27th July 2002 by former President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, Dr. Alhaji
Ahmed Tejan Kabbah.
That same year AWOL held its first National Achievement Awards at the Family Kingdom.
Since joining its many sub branches in 2013 AWOL Australia Inc. has been was working towards its
aims of creating pathways for community development in Sierra Leone and within Australia with the
goal of meeting the needs of diversity of abilities. AWOL Australia is currently working on projects
with the end goals of increasing awareness amongst Sierra Leonean-Australians about the
importance of social and economic growth in Sierra Leone, targeting the disadvantaged and at risk
members of the population at the same time unifying and strengthening the Sierra Leone
community and identity.
